About Cabrillo College

Cabrillo College, located at 6500 Soquel Drive in Aptos, California, is a distinguished public community college that has been serving the educational needs of Santa Cruz County and surrounding areas since its establishment in 1959. Named after the 16th-century explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, the college has grown from its modest beginnings—when classes were initially held in a partially abandoned high school—to a vibrant institution enrolling approximately 9,700 students each term. This growth reflects Cabrillo College’s enduring commitment to providing accessible, high-quality education tailored to a diverse student body[1][2][3].

The college offers a broad spectrum of academic and vocational programs, including over 70 associate degree options and 30 certificate programs. These programs are designed to meet the varied goals of students, whether they aim to transfer seamlessly to four-year universities or enter the workforce with specialized skills. Cabrillo College maintains strong transfer agreements with several University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) campuses, facilitating smooth transitions for students pursuing bachelor’s degrees. This emphasis on transfer pathways underscores the college’s role as a critical stepping stone in higher education[2].

Cabrillo College is also recognized for its focus on STEM education, highlighted by the Baskin Engineering, Physics and Computing Center on the Aptos campus. This facility serves as a hub for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics courses and includes the Monterey Peninsula Foundation STEM Center, which provides workshops, tutoring, and labs to support student success in these fields. Additionally, the college’s Watsonville Center hosts the Solari Green Technology Center, a LEED Platinum-certified building dedicated to courses in renewable energy, solar technology, and sustainable construction management. These specialized centers demonstrate Cabrillo’s commitment to innovative, environmentally conscious education that aligns with current industry trends[1][3].

Beyond academics, Cabrillo College fosters a supportive and inclusive campus environment. The Aptos campus features modern facilities such as the Barbara Samper Student Activities Center, the Cabrillo College Arts Education Complex, and a Health & Wellness Center, all designed to enhance student life and well-being. The campus also honors social justice and community values, exemplified by a bust of Martin Luther King Jr. prominently displayed in the main quad. Student services include counseling, tutoring, and career guidance, ensuring that learners receive comprehensive support throughout their educational journey. A variety of student clubs, cultural events, and community activities further enrich campus life, promoting engagement and diversity[1][2][5].

Governance at Cabrillo College is overseen by a Board of Trustees representing seven areas across Santa Cruz County, along with a Student Trustee who voices the interests of enrolled students. The college is led by Superintendent and President Dr. Matthew Wetstein, an experienced educator and leader in California’s community college system. Under his leadership, Cabrillo continues to prioritize educational quality, institutional effectiveness, and student success[5][7].

Cabrillo College’s history program exemplifies its academic rigor, emphasizing analytical writing and critical thinking skills that prepare students for careers in education, law, government, journalism, international business, and more. This program reflects the college’s broader mission to equip students with the intellectual tools necessary for lifelong learning and professional achievement[6][8].

I spent 6 months arguing with a professor in English I submitted an assignment and my grade should be fixed. Never happened. My sociology professor spent most of the class blaming white men and the military for her problems. I had a question in math, was the first to raise my hand, got skipped, and when I didn't put my hand down the professor said "no more questions, see me in my office" which her office hours conflicted with my other classes. This place sucks. Even as a community college.

Cleanliness is clearly a top priority here. While the campus is beautifully surrounded by trees and boasts stunning natural scenery—including a view of the Pacific Ocean—the most impressive aspects are the genuinely helpful instructors and the outstanding student resources. The interiors are absolutely spotless, and the Computer Technology Center (CTC) is fully modernized. There are endless free snacks, coffee, and tea available at multiple spots across campus. If you ask me, the Veterans Information Center has the best stash, which is just one more great reason to look into joining the military! Serving four years in the Air Force was the best thing I ever did, right next to enrolling at Cabrillo. You won't find a single ant or pest in the immaculate library, so I'm completely confident the review by Sarah J. is just a disgruntled student making things up. The cafeteria always smells amazing and the food is fantastic—I highly recommend grabbing the breakfast burrito. Honestly, I've never even seen a single piece of trash anywhere on campus. The bathrooms are just as reliable. Sure, a few of them could use a minor facelift, but I don't go to school to hang out in the restroom, s

This is one of the most beautiful campuses I have ever been on. It is quite hilly and large too, with so many elevation changes that stairs and elevators are a way of life here. Student parking can be a bit far from class sometimes, since priority was given to foot/ bike travel when this place was built. This community college has many program choices, focusing on STEAM, dental and nursing, with a budding horticulture program that is well worth a visit + a construction program that prepares students for estimating and project management. They run on a semester system. One can simply achieve their standard Associates degree here, e.g. business, liberal arts, etc. or, go after one of the concentration programs. A visit with an academic counselor will help sort that out. The cafeteria offers a few culinary options, such as an internal taqueria station, prepackaged sushi rolls and salads, fresh fruits, a salad bar and regular diner-style foods. There is an over priced cafe in the main quad area, with often sassy workers. Follow the sound of a playlist blasting from a Bluetooth speaker to find it. The culture is very liberal, which can be supportive but exhausting when everyone need

I went here for three years. Cabrillo’s classes and great professors helped me prepare to transfer to a UC, and for that I’m very grateful! I didn’t have much contact with the counseling department and found my own research for transferring to be far more helpful. The ASC (accessibility support center) was very helpful for my accommodation needs. Reasonable tuition prices. It is a campus where everyone pretty much does their own thing, but I liked it here.
